Grade 5 have been exploring color families and have made abstract organic designs with hot, cool and cold colors. We used oil pastel with a watercolor wash.

Monochromatic works of art by Mark Rothko.
Rothko was born in Russia in 1903. He and his family moved to Oregon when he was 10 years old. They struggled for money. Rothko did well in school and earned a scholarship to Yale University. He thought he would become an engineer or an attorney—careers at which he would make some money. In 1923, his second year of college, Rothko left Yale. Mark Rothko’s art became more abstract at the end of the 1940s. He decided that simple shapes were the best for showing complicated feelings. The large, simple shapes allow you to feel instead of think when you look at Rothko’s paintings.

Art Ideas for exploring Monochromatic Colors.
THE HAZE.
We used the haze over Singapore as inspiration for a monochromatic composition. To create the blurred effect we used chalk, charcoal and soft pastel which were easy to blend and create soft edges.
THE HAZE OVER SINGAPORE 2015
We can see how the haze changes colors in the distance.
SANDSTORMS.
Sandstorms can create a similar monochromatic effect.

SEMESTER 2.
Changing 2D images into 3D sculptures.
This semester we have been looking at Pablo Picasso's image of Guernica which we had also saw last semester in How We Express Ourselves.
Guernica is a painting by famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. It was painted as a reaction to the aerial bombing of Guernica, Spain by German and Italian forces during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. The Spanish Republic, government of Spain, appointed Picasso to paint a large mural about the bombing to display at the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris.
We looked at the image of Guernica and identified some of the images.

Picasso working on Guernica.
Guernica shows the cataclysms of war as well as the anguish and destruction it inflicts upon people, especially innocent civilians. This painting has attained an enormous reputation over the years, and has become an everlasting reminder of the devastation of war, in addition to becoming an anti-war icon. After it was completed, Guernica was exhibited worldwide during a limited tour, receiving wide acclaim and becoming quite famous. The exposure assisted in bringing the Spanish Civil War to the world’s awareness.
In our first lesson we looked at a video which showed how the images of Guernica were transformed into a 3D sculpture.
